Growing and Managing an Entrepreneurial Business
Published in Paperback by Houghton Mifflin Co (January, 1999)
Author: Kathleen R. Allen
Average review score:

More than a business plan recipe....
This book is more than a plain business plan recipe. By accurately addressing the profile of the entrepreneur, Dr. Allen allows the potential entrepreneur to excersise a soul-searching effort to determine the presence of (or the lack of) the attributes that most entrepreneurs share. The creative process required to generate a truly entrepreneurial product or service (and not just the new same old business) is also discussed through a survey of techniques that can be applied to almost any context. Finally, the author addresses in a rigorous but in a straight-to-the-point fashion what the entrepreneur must DO and what he (her) has to WRITE in order to build a robust business plan. Eventhough the target of this book are business students (based on the text-book format adopted by the author), the text contents are universal and the discussed methods can be applied to the international context - as I did as a matter of fact. I strongly recommend this book to any person about to undertake the risky but exciting entrepreneurial endeavor.

A Guide to Collecting Cookbooks: A History of People, Companies and Cooking
Published in Paperback by Collector Books (1998)
Authors: Colonel Bob Allen and Bob Allen
Average review score:

If I Could Only Have One Reference Book On This Subject...
...This Would Be It! Colonel Allen's enthusiasm for the subject led him to produce what is probably the definitive work in the field of collecting cookbooks. This book sweeps up both the new and the experienced collector into the fascinating world of vintage cookbooks and their value as a source of historical information. The only drawback I found was the grouping of books in categories for the price guide section, as I found myself thumbing through many places to locate a particular cookbook. However, it contains an exhaustive listing, and once you get used to it, the layout is only a minor annoyance. Along with Dickinson's and Barile's books on the subject, it is fast becoming dog-eared from daily use!

Gullible's Travels
Published in Audio Cassette by Prometheus Books (October, 1995)
Authors: Steve Allen and Jane Meadows
Average review score:

so "kids won't like this"? my nieces (8 & 5) LOVE it!
The first editorial review wants me to believe that kids won't like and can't understand this tape. Fortunately, I read that review AFTER buying it for my nieces (age 5 and 8). They LOVE the tape, they play it almost daily, and they (and I) have learned A LOT from it! They particularly enjoyed and absorbed Steve's explanation of how brains work - to which the first reviewer strongly objected - as well as his material on observation versus inference (an important topic which, as far as I know, *no* other children's book or tape covers in a way that children can understand).

Halfmoons and Dwarf Parrots
Published in Paperback by TFH Publications (January, 1900)
Author: William Allen
Average review score:

Charming book about a charming (if a bit noisy) subject
This is one of the finest pet books ever written; it doesn't sound "canned," as so many books on pet care do. The author's enthusiasm for these most enthusiastic of pets comes through. He gives enough anecdotal information to hold the reader's interest but backs it up with solid facts and how-to's on the care, taming, training and breeding of halfmoon conures. For instance, he is very honest about the noise factor: dwarf parrots of all species can be raucous! The chapter on other popular dwarf parrots is necessarily abbreviated but informative enough to "do" until the reader could find a book on his particular pet. (Bates and Busenbark's PARROTS AND RELATED BIRDS, recommended in this book, would be an excellent choice for that reader). All in all, a delightful read.

Handbook of Nonprescription Drugs
Published in Hardcover by Amer Pharmaceutical Assn (15 July, 2000)
Authors: Loyd V. Allen Jr., Rosemary R. Berardi, Edward M. Desimone, Janet P. Engle, Nicholas G. Popovich, Wendy Munroe Rosenthal, Karen J. Tietze, and American Pharmaceutical Association
Average review score:

Recommendation
As a third year pharmacy student, I am particularly impressed with the organization and conciseness of this guidebook to non-prescription products. This text is simple to follow, for health care professionals and also the average consumer who has questions and concerns about medications that they are buying over-the-counter.

Handbook of Psychotherapy and Religious Diversity
Published in Hardcover by American Psychological Association (APA) (March, 2000)
Authors: P. Scott Richards and Allen E. Bergin
Average review score:

Understand the convergence of religion and psychotherapy
This was an extremely important reference book when I wrote "Spiritual Health Psychology" (ISBN: 0966841735). The authors present the pros and cons of using spiritual and religious interventions with patients in need. Therapists and religious counselors alike will benefit from reading this pioneering book.

Handbook of Snakes of the United States and Canada (Comstock Classic Handbooks Vol. One)
Published in Paperback by Cornell Univ Pr (June, 1994)
Authors: Albert Hazen Wright, Anna Allen Wright, and Jonathan A. Canpbell
Average review score:

THE BEST WORK IN THIS FIELD!
If you want all the details of habitat, general areas and specific locations of occurence, scientific nomenclature and classification, numbers of specimens actually found AND the time of day or night when found; in short, a thoroughness of American snakes that is unsurpassed, this book has been outdone by none.

The photographs are documentary (lab like) in style; this is not your high color coffee table- like photo work. But they are clear and produced for the positive identification of species.

This book came out many years ago. The technical information is still terrific. But read closely in places, old Americana is here. Listen for the desert winds, crackling cinders in the campfire, the lurching old '49 car, the sighing from the abandoned mine that gave all she had to give. There are interesting "field" stories scattered, albeit sparsely, but scattered through the books (two volumes).

Without a doubt, the absolute classic in its field. The husband and wife team has never been surpassed.

Hands on Powerpoint 2000 (Hands on Series)
Published in Paperback by Jamsa Press (November, 1999)
Authors: Konrad King and Allen L. Wyatt
Average review score:

Excellent PowerPoint tutorial
I'm a third of the way through the book and am extremely satisfied with the way it was put together. The author carefully steps one through the process of creating a presentation without boring you if you're familiar with other MS Office software.

I, unfortunately, purchased the "Hands On Excel 2000" assuming that the material would be presented in the same way. Well, we know what "assume" means, don't we. Don't bother purchasing the Excel book.
